How CGPA Is Calculated from SGPA
CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average — it reflects your overall performance across every semester you've completed so far, not just one term. Most universities calculate it in one of two ways:
Simple Average
CGPA = (SGPA₁ + SGPA₂ + ... + SGPAₙ) ÷ n
This method treats every semester equally, regardless of how many credits each one carried.
Credit-Weighted Average
CGPA = Σ(SGPA × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits)
This method gives semesters with more credit hours a larger influence on your final CGPA — the method most engineering and university programs actually use. Enter credits in the optional column above and the calculator automatically switches to this weighted method.
Example Calculation
Suppose you scored an SGPA of 8.5 in semester one (20 credits) and 8.7 in semester two (22 credits). Using the weighted formula:
CGPA = (8.5 × 20 + 8.7 × 22) ÷ (20 + 22) = (170 + 191.4) ÷ 42 = 8.60
