How to Convert Percentage to CGPA
Converting percentage back to CGPA is simply the inverse of the standard CGPA-to-percentage formula. On the 10-point scale used by CBSE and most Indian universities:
CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5
For example, if you scored 79.8%, dividing by 9.5 gives a CGPA of 8.4. For the 5-point and 4-point scales, the formula is a simple proportion:
CGPA = (Percentage ÷ 100) × Maximum Scale
So 84% on a 5-point scale becomes (84 ÷ 100) × 5 = 4.2 CGPA.

Why the Conversion Is an Approximation
Because CGPA bands multiple percentage values into a single grade point, converting from percentage back to CGPA gives a close estimate rather than the exact value your institution would assign. If your university uses a custom formula — such as VTU's or Mumbai University's — use our CGPA to Percentage Calculator to check which formula applies, then work backward using algebra, or contact your examination cell for the precise figure.
