How to Calculate Percentage from Marks

The formula for converting marks into a percentage is one of the simplest in all of academics:

Percentage = (Marks Obtained ÷ Total Marks) × 100

For example, if you scored 425 out of 500 in your final exams, your percentage is (425 ÷ 500) × 100 = 85%.

Calculating Percentage Across Multiple Subjects

If you want your overall percentage across several subjects, first add up all the marks obtained, then add up all the total marks available, and apply the same formula to the sums:

Overall % = (Sum of Marks Obtained ÷ Sum of Total Marks) × 100

For instance, if you scored 78/100 in Maths, 85/100 in Physics, and 91/100 in Chemistry, your overall percentage is (78+85+91) ÷ 300 × 100 = 84.67%.
