How Weighted Final Grades Are Calculated

Most courses don't grade everything equally — a final exam usually counts for more than a single homework assignment. The weighted average formula accounts for this:

Final Grade = Σ(Component Score × Component Weight) ÷ Σ(Weights)

For example, if assignments (20% weight) scored 90%, a midterm (30% weight) scored 78%, and a final exam (50% weight) scored 85%, the final grade is:

(90×20 + 78×30 + 85×50) ÷ 100 = (1800 + 2340 + 4250) ÷ 100 = 83.9%

If your weights don't already add up to 100%, the calculator still works correctly — it divides by the total weight entered rather than assuming 100.

Working Backward: What Score Do I Need on My Final?

A common use case is figuring out what score you need on a remaining exam to hit a target grade. Enter your known components and weights, then try different scores for the missing component until the final grade matches your goal — this calculator makes that trial-and-error process fast.

Once you have your final percentage, convert it to a CGPA using our Percentage to CGPA calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply each component's score by its weight percentage, add the results together, then divide by the total weight. If weights already sum to 100%, this gives your final weighted percentage directly.
Enter your current grades and weights into the calculator, leave the final exam score blank, and work backward by testing different scores until the result matches your target grade.
