A Complete Guide to University Grading Systems in India

CGPAIndian UniversitiesGrading Formulas

India doesn't have one single CGPA-to-percentage formula — each university and examination board defines its own conversion method, and the differences matter when you're applying for jobs, higher education, or visas. This guide breaks down the formulas used by some of the most common Indian universities and boards.

CBSE and the Standard 9.5 Formula

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) popularized the most widely recognized CGPA-to-percentage formula in India:

Percentage = CGPA × 9.5

Many universities that don't publish their own explicit formula default to this method, and it's a reasonable approximation if you can't find your specific institution's policy.

VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University)

VTU uses a different linear formula than the CBSE standard:

Percentage = (CGPA × 10) − 7.5

This formula gives a noticeably different result than the ×9.5 method at most CGPA values, so VTU students should always use this specific formula rather than the generic one.

Mumbai University

Mumbai University applies its own distinct formula:

Percentage = (CGPA × 7.1) + 11

This formula produces results that diverge significantly from both the CBSE and VTU methods at the high and low ends of the scale, making it especially important to use the correct formula for Mumbai University transcripts.

GTU (Gujarat Technological University)

GTU follows the same formula structure as VTU:

Percentage = (CGPA × 10) − 7.5

AKTU (Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University)

AKTU also uses the same structure:

Percentage = (CGPA × 10) − 7.5

SPPU (Savitribai Phule Pune University)

SPPU uses a steeper offset:

Percentage = (CGPA × 10) − 12.5

Anna University

Anna University uses one of the simplest formulas — a direct multiplication with no offset:

Percentage = CGPA × 10

Side-by-Side Comparison

To illustrate how much these formulas diverge, here's how a CGPA of 8.0 converts under each system:

University / BoardFormula8.0 CGPA →
CBSE / StandardCGPA × 9.576.0%
VTU(CGPA × 10) − 7.572.5%
Mumbai University(CGPA × 7.1) + 1167.8%
SPPU(CGPA × 10) − 12.567.5%
Anna UniversityCGPA × 1080.0%

The same 8.0 CGPA can mean anywhere from roughly 68% to 80% depending on the institution — a meaningful gap if you're comparing eligibility thresholds for a job or admission that requires a minimum percentage.

How to Find Your Institution's Exact Formula

  • Check your official transcript or marksheet — many universities print the formula directly on the document.
  • Visit your university's examination cell website or student handbook, which typically publishes the official grading policy.
  • Contact your academic counselor or examination department directly if the formula isn't published online.

Once you know your university's formula, you can apply it instantly using our CGPA to Percentage calculator, which has VTU, Mumbai University, GTU, AKTU, SPPU, and Anna University formulas built in alongside the CBSE standard.

A Note on Accuracy

University policies can change between academic years, and our formulas are based on the most widely cited public documentation.
